What are Your Plans for the Rest of the Year?

Hello November! With two months left until the new year, this is a time where most people slow down their productivity as they focus on the holidays, social events, and time off from work. They see January as the ideal time for new year’s resolutions, fresh starts, and new healthy habits and they take their foot off the gas pedal in November and December. If most people are doing that, why not do things differently?

My favorite motivational speaker/mindset coach Ed Mylett talks about how you can actually stand out and differentiate yourself from the pack at the end of the year. He calls it “separation season”. While everyone else is sleeping in late or skipping workouts or reaching for a second helping of cookies, you can be the person writing an extra 200+ words or beating your personal running best by another minute. All you need to do is decide to do so.

So how do you optimize your time, productivity, and wellbeing over the next two months? My suggestion is to either add in a new positive habit or subtract an existing negative habit to or from your day-to-day life.

Examples of positive habits to add:

  • Yoga

  • Reading

  • Meditation

  • Daily walks

  • Gratitude practice

  • Breathing exercises

  • Writing and/or journaling

  • Stepping up your workouts in the gym

Examples of negative habits to subtract:

  • Staying up too late at night

  • Drinking alcohol every night

  • Scrolling social media apps without boundaries or limits

  • Watching fear-inducing content on TV i.e., true crime stories, horror movies, the mainstream news

Small changes lead to big results over time – even practicing five minutes of meditation per day adds up to a big positive result after a couple of weeks. The point isn’t to add MORE to your already-full to-do list and overwork yourself just for the sake of saying you were more productive. This is about improving your overall wellbeing by changing a few of your daily habits while there’s still two months until 2023.

Personally, this year has been a period of self-reflection and growth for me; however, each of us has had our own unique experience in 2022. My advice is to acknowledge, accept and appreciate how far you’ve come this year and then refocus on your remaining goals for the next two months. Separation season gives you the chance to embody the person you want to be next year, starting now. Why wait until January? Why be like everyone else? You have the power and the choice to improve. Change is inevitable, but growth is optional.

Namaste,

Erin
